[From April 1996 Newsletter]
If you are having trouble locating the place or county in New York State of a marriage, birth or death, you can sent a request to the State Archives for a search of up to three years for an event for a specific person. The index begins 1880/81 and covers all of New York State excluding New York City. There is, however, the privacy law that covers births for the past 75 years and marriages and deaths for the past 50 years. The charge is $5.00 per record search and should be made on their "Vital Records Index Search Request & Reply" form (BAS-2 10/92). We have copies of those forms available or they can be requested from the NYS Archives. Your request form along with your check or money order for $5.00 made payable to NYS Archives should be sent to: New York State Archives (Incidentally, they are quite prompt. A request made last month received an answer within two weeks.) |
