Records Search: Bodies In Transit

Between 1859 and 1894, for public health reasons, the recording of the transportation of corpses into, out of, and through New York City was required. These included the bodies of many soldiers transported from Civil War battlefields, and the body of President Lincoln on its way through New York. The records include the date, cause and place of death, place of interment, age and birthplace. The index can be searched by name and date of death.

NOTE: The microfilm from which this index was created was not in good condition. Fields that could not be read were either left blank, or "unknown" was entered.
